Ozaukee County and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation are in the process of developing plans
to improve the County C (Pioneer Rd) & County W (N Port Washington Rd) Intersection. The project is
located in the City of Mequon and Town of Grafton, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. The project is centered
around the County C & County W intersection. Construction is currently scheduled for 2027. The entire information packet can be viewed here and the packet includes information on how to submit comments.
Project needs
• Intersection Safety and Operational Issues.
Proposed Improvements
• Realign left turn lanes on all four legs to provide better sight lines for left-turning traffic. This will
include pavement widening on the north and south legs of the intersection, and median
realignment on the east and west legs of the intersection.
• Replace the traffic signals with new bases, poles, signal heads, and wiring. Changes will include
adding left turn arrows for all 4 directions to allow protected left turns as well as adding flashing
yellow arrows.
Traffic Impacts
• The intersection will remain open with temporary signals.
• County C and County W may be closed to one lane in each direction during construction.
• Daytime flagging may be used to help direct traffic safely through the work zone.
• Traffic delays should be expected, especially during peak travel times.
• The project is expected to take 2-3 months for construction.
Right of Way Needs
Right-of-way acquisition is expected with the project. FEE right-of-way is needed at a few properties
adjacent to the intersection to construct turn lanes and traffic signal improvements. Ozaukee County is
expected to begin real estate acquisition in early 2026. A member of the real estate staff will be in contact
with you if your property will be affected.
